Reclaim Your Health and Improve Your Quality of Life

LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA is an evidence-based 12-week program that helps adult cancer survivors reclaim their health and well-being after a cancer diagnosis. A supportive, certified instructor leads a small group through cardiovascular conditioning, strength training, balance, and flexibility exercises.

Camaraderie, encouragement and healthy activity are key components of LIVESTRONG at the YMCA.

Jen, one of the Lincoln participants, says anyone can benefit at any stage of treatment or recovery. "I wish I had done this during treatment. It would’ve helped to know it’s OK to exercise. Just to keep up doing whatever you can. This group does that and supports each other."

For regular attendees, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is proven to:

  • Help survivors meet or exceed the recommended amount of physical activity.
  • Help survivors significantly increase their cardiovascular endurance.
  • Improve survivors’ overall quality of life and decrease their cancer-related fatigue.

In each LIVESTRONG at the YMCA class, participants will have:

    • A certified instructor with special training to bring out their physical best.
    • Two 90-minute sessions per week for 12 weeks.
    • Cardiovascular conditioning, strength training, balance, and flexibility exercises.
    • Opportunities to socialize and make new friends in a supportive environment.
    • Evaluation that includes Functional and Quality of Life assessments before and after participation.

Stories from Lincoln Participants & Community Organizations:

Anya Kerkman, Physical Therapist, DPT, CLT-LANA | St. Elizabeth Sports & Physical Therapy

"I have had such positive feedback about your [LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA] program. It is such a wonderful adjunct to our cancer rehabilitation program here, and such a nice transition for patients into the community, further into their own wellness journey. Thank you for all of your work!"

"Weight lifting has long-lasting health benefits when you have no thyroid. But I don’t know much about weight lifting. It’s daunting. So through LIVESTRONG®, we get to learn about different workouts. It gets me more comfortable with the whole gym so I feel comfortable exercising on my own. I don’t feel like going to this group is a chore. I 'get' to go! We have fun and can share tips, too."

    Jen

"I’m more comfortable working out in this group, learning workouts at the Y that I can do later on my own. Also, I wish there had been something like this when I was in treatment. You don’t have to wait to benefit. It would have been nice to have a trainer to help keep my energy up and stay limber during treatment. It’s really hard to take a year off and try to get back to where you were."

    Rachel

"Doing this as a group, I'm more committed to do it. I'm less likely to blow it off when I'm doing it with others who are going through the same things."

    Theresa

"LIVESTRONG® has helped me learn what to do and what not to do. Even during treatment, staying active in small ways can help you."
