Shannon's Y Story

Shannon's Y Story

I have worked out, sporadically, for more than a decade since I moved from Northern California to Nebraska, but I never really got serious about my health until June 2017. After having had a few physicals over the past couple years, being diagnosed with Lyme disease and a fatty liver, I decided it was time to take charge of my health and turn things around. This decision was not only for my sake, but for the sake of my wife and children. I had felt awful for so long, something had to change.

The Northeast YMCA became my catalyst for change. I have found that the Northeast YMCA is so much more than just a gym. It is a place for change, connection, and improvement. Last summer I met with a Wellness Specialist to do a health assessment and she created a personalized exercise program for me. For the first 6-7 months I stuck with the program I was given and worked out an hour a day, 5-6 days a week (even when I felt sick). I started out at 210 lbs. and now weigh 165 lbs. I never thought that I would weigh as much or be as healthy as I was 20 years ago. The Northeast YMCA is a safe space and a community of wonderful staff and members who I look forward to seeing almost every day. I have more self-confidence and a happier outlook on life now, compared to when I began this serious journey almost a year ago.

The “Y” has become a big “why not” in my life and I am thankful for the change it has made.
