Terra's Y Story

Terra's Y Story

I started going to the Northeast YMCA when I heard from my oncologist about the LIVESTRONG® program. At 22, I had been diagnosed with stage 4 Hodgkin's Lymphoma and had little strength left after 6 months of treatment. I thought I would join the program not only to regain my strength but to start living a healthier lifestyle so I might never have to worry about getting sick again.

I didn’t have a membership when I first entered the program. When I went to the Y to try the LIVESTRONG® classes, I was sad to find out the current program was nearing an end, but the faculty at Northeast allowed me to join for the last few weeks. My instructors Terri and Jessica were so supportive and it felt like I wasn't going to a program for cancer survivors, it felt like it was another day where I got to see two friends. The program really set me on my path to living healthier.

I got a membership after the program ended. I had to apply for the YMCA financial assistance--since I had barely any income at the time--having been on medical leave for so long. This assistance is among many other reasons I love the YMCA. They aren't a gym that's out to just get your money. At no point did I feel like I wasn't cared about. And because of their programs, classes, and assistance, I'm on the road to recovery and thankfully in chronic remission.
